The WHITE VIOLIN
This figure here is of a character from Gerard Way’s brilliant comic book The Umbrella Academy. If you don’t recognize the name he is the lead singer of the punk/rock/pop/ band My Chemical Romance. I happen to really like that band but even if you hate them you really shouldn’t let that deter you from checking out his writing. He has released two Umbrella Academy mini series and they are both fantastic. Not only is the writing stellar but the art is top notch as well, Brazilian artist Gabriel Ba channels Mike Mignola but retains an individual style all his own. His artwork was translated excellently into the 3rd dimension to create this series of figurines. Released as a 6 pack with her adopted Umbrella Academy siblings in a nifty umbrella shaped package this made for a really cool set. You can also find this figure packaged with a collected edition of the first 6 issue mini series which I think you should go buy tomorrow.
The figure itself is simple and has no movement making it more of a statue than an action figure. It looks like it leapt from the page and captures the feel of the book perfectly. The painted shadowing is nicely done and makes what could be potentially a boring figure quite interesting to look at. She’s freaky and kinda sexy and definitely looks cool up on the bookshelf. 7 out of 10.
